Weight training is important for helping to maintain muscle mass, bone density, and overall strength. It also supports better balance, joint health, and reduces the risk of falls and chronic disease as we age.
The Community Centre has a compact but well-equipped gym area.
Fitness Centre News
This year has brought a new training opportunity and changes to the Fitness Centre area at the Mayne Island Community Centre:
- Weight training classes with Judie Wilson, a passionate fitness enthusiast with coaching/training fitness experience spanning decades. Judie will offer a 2-part series of six classes. Part 1 – Engage the core: Functional movement patterns with light weights; Part 2 – Building on a strong foundation with heavier weights. See the poster with dates and times. If you are interested in attending this 2 part series, please email mayneislandcommunitycentre@gmail.com with the subject “Strength and Conditioning.” A Community Centre membership is required.
- New equipment: Inspire M2 multi-gym, new kettlebells, new dumbbells and Olympic weight plates (these made possible by Mayne Island Parks and Recreation Commission grants and by reinvesting any profits we have made from fitness room memberships.)
- We have removed some lesser-used equipment and rearranged the room to create more space to work out.
- A new door has been installed that better separates the fitness centre from the main hall (but please respect other users of the Community Centre – some classes in the main hall require quiet).
- The gym can now be accessed 24/7 from the back door, without going through the main hall.

Important Safety Information
The gym area is unsupervised, and users are responsible for educating themselves on how to use the equipment safely.
For safety when working out alone, fitness centre users must download and use a smartphone app capable of sending an alert to an emergency contact if a timer in the app goes to zero. Some examples are “Panic Button Emergency SOS” (by Solvaday) for Android phones, and “My SOS Family” for Android or iPhones. The timer in the app must to set to send an alert after 15 minutes (maximum) unless reset or stopped by the user.
Download a PDF with general instructions for setting up and using an emergency alert app (as required by our insurance) below.
